Background
SIAE (Italian Society of Authors and Publishers) began a comprehensive digital transformation aimed at simplifying how musicians, DJs, bands, and event organizers manage and declare music played during public events. As part of this journey, mioBorderò—a digital service and mobile app—was created to allow users to compile and submit their “Programmi Musicali” (performance setlists) quickly, accurately, and entirely online.

Core problem
Before mioBorderò, submitting performance data was a time-consuming, manual process involving physical paperwork or disjointed online tools. This complexity often led to errors, delays, and frustration for both artists and event organizers, impacting SIAE's ability to distribute royalties efficiently.
My role
- I worked as a UX & Service Designer,
I worked within a multidisciplinary team to define user journeys, uncover pain points, and co-create intuitive digital experiences.
- I facilitated workshops with internal SIAE departments and contributed to user research, wireframing, prototyping, and aligning design with business and technical requirements.
Challenge
Redesigning a deeply bureaucratic process within an organization undergoing cultural and technological change. The app needed to be inclusive for various user profiles—from tech-savvy DJs to occasional event organizers—and adhere to legal requirements for copyright reporting.
Main hypothesis
If we streamline and digitize the process of compiling and submitting Programmi Musicali, users will feel more in control, submit more accurate information, and be more satisfied with SIAE as a service provider.
Goals
- Improve the user experience for music event stakeholders
- Ensure accurate and timely copyright reporting
- Reduce service delivery times and back-office workload
- Position SIAE as a modern, transparent institution
Approach
- Conducted stakeholder interviews and workshops
- Mapped user journeys for Directors of Execution and Organizers
- Defined personas and prioritized user needs
- Designed a cohesive mobile and web experience with simplified workflows
- Integrated performance monitoring tools and interactive data visualizations
Users weren’t just frustrated with the interface—they didn’t fully understand their role in the process. A clear, guided experience that reflected their real-world tasks and timelines was critical to adoption and satisfaction.
🔄 Fragmented and manual workflows
📱💻 Poor alignment between mobile and web tools
⏳ Delayed royalty payments due to incomplete or incorrect forms
Process
- Research & Co-design: Interviews, journey mapping, and brand alignment workshops with SIAE stakeholders
- Ideation: Experience flows, low- and high-fidelity prototyping
- Testing & Iteration: Feedback loops via a private pilot phase
Outcome
- An intuitive mobile app available in Italian, English, and German
- Full digitization of Programmi Musicali submissions
- Biometric login and simplified flows
- Faster declaration = quicker royalty distribution
- Higher engagement and satisfaction among users

Solution
mioBorderò allowed event organizers to assign Directors of Execution, and performers to compile setlists directly via a guided mobile app or online portal. The app offered:
- Quick search and playlist creation
- Role-specific guidance
- Multilingual interface
- Real-time data sync and push updates

Learnings
- Designing for bureaucracy requires clarity above all: what users must do, why, and when
- A co-design approach with internal departments breaks silos and boosts alignment
- Simplifying flows has a measurable impact on adoption—even in low-tech environments
Impact
- Streamlined rights reporting for thousands of users
- Faster payments and better data accuracy
- Positive brand repositioning of SIAE
- Foundation for future digital services in the music copyright space
